London art-school dropouts Ikara Colt’s new EP, “Basic Instructions” is a refreshing piece of noise/art-punk with a hypnotizing and addictive composition.
Forming in 1999, they spent a lot of time doing nothing and finally got around to recording a demo in the spring of 2001. Shortly thereafter they were signed to Fantastic Plastic in England and subsequently to Epitaph in the States.
At first listen “Basic Instructions” was good, but with subsequent listens it grew on me more and more... Their sound encompasses a mixture of dead-pan (mostly male) vocals layered with noisy chords ala Sonic Youth’s "Teenage Riot,” The Fall circa “Totally Wired” and more currently a bit of The Whitestripes; all while sounding more urgent and on the edge than the aforementioned.
While the disc was entirely enjoyable, the tracks that really stood out were “Don’t They Know” & “May B 1 Day #1,” which the latter is also included as a bonus video on the CD. Ikara Colt shows a raw and intriguing new direction of the punk rock attitude. Check them out…
