The (International) Noise Conspiracy, although technically “international,” sound like just about every late-70s band you’ve ever heard. This, of course, is not a bad thing. Produced by Rick Rubin (who has recently been channeling Trust-era Nick Lowe), Armed Love is an example of political arena rock done well.
In the course of writing this review, I did some research on The (International) Noise Conspiracy. They’re originally from Sweden, and, according to one website, their founding members wanted to channel their punk-rock musings into a band that played political music. Armed Love shows them succeeding on both fronts, with song titles like “Communist Moon” and lyrics like “It’s finally coming: the changing weather / That we’ve been fighting for / First a great storm then a sunrise / Could we ask for more?” The album is slickly produced, and it’s not clear to me whether or not The (International) Noise Conspiracy’s fans consider this album to be a sell out or a welcome progression into the world of “mainstream” political rock and roll. There is some love sprinkled in with the politics -- “You can call me romantic, you can call me what you will / But when I think about the revolution you’re still in my dreams” -- but it is clear that The (International) Noise Conspiracy won’t be leaving their political leanings behind anytime soon.
The (International) Noise Conspiracy aren’t quite Billy Bragg. Their lyrics could use a bit of punching up; oftentimes, they stick with a clunky metaphor or a tired line when a bit of creativity could have led to a more powerful lyrical result. The music, however, is a heck of a lot of fun; this is the reason to seek out this record. If The (International) Noise Conspiracy continues on the path of most resistance, they may indeed drum up a following of young men and women troubled by the government and ready to mosh for change. If this is the case, there is no doubt that The (International) Noise Conspiracy will have accomplished their goals. I wish them well in their punk-and-political pursuits. |
