I have never been a fan of heavy-metal-chomping-guitar-of-death style of music. I was not a fan of it during 80’s with Iron Maiden, and Slayer. Nor am I a fan of it’s contemporary incarnation that ranges from the intense stupidity of bands like Limp Bizkit to the more watered down versions of metal (Where each song starts out with a single acoustic guitar and a wavering male voice poised to scream as loud as he can the moment the power chords and drum smashing kick in.). Bands like Creed, Lincoln Park and whoever sang that lame “Spiderman” song have always been too formulaic for me. “Oceanic” the latest release from Isis is a refreshing change from anything in the genre that’s ever found it’s way to my ears.
The aptly named album takes on a wide range of moods and is not far from ambient music at times. Sure there are crouching guitars with power chords and angst driven lyrics, but spaced out by instrumental sections that lace the whole album into one complete track. Tracks like “Maritime” with its almost Enigma like sound manage to transition seamlessly into the thundering roar of guitars on “From Sinking” by going through the track “Weight” with it’s largely percussion based theme and album’s only female vocals. I found the whole thing to grow on me more and more with each listen; it has the feel of experimental music where in the experiment was a success. The ever changing band line up and apparent patience in the recording studio allow for this kind of work to feel out it’s own organic route. The band itself most likely has got in common with Kronos Quartet than Korn.
The album stands as a testament to the fact that any form of music can show depth and utilize lush orchestration, and are fully capable (in this case) of taking us ton a kind of opera or at least on some sort of journey And while you might not like every movement, you have to kind of sit back and admire the thing as a whole.
