7 Jens Lekman Kalendervägen 113.D Service | 2007 | Bonus Disc Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Kalendervägen 113.D is the title of the bonus CD that has shipped with initial copies of Lekman’s new album Night Falls Over Kortedala. Lekman has always been a generous artist often given away unreleased material and demos on his website. He also makes a habit of releasing limited copies of EP’s that he sells when on tour. It no great surprise then that he has given away 30 minutes worth of music as a bonus to his loyal fan base. The collection was recorded live in Jen’s apartment as he packed up to move to Australia and start his world tour in support of Night Falls Over Kortedala. The songs are reduced to their bare bones, a guitar, a loop pedal and voice. The ambience provided by the empty flat gives the material a fragile reverb heavy quality. It sounds like a lost bootleg of a 50’s crooner demoing songs for Sun Records. It opens with a haunting version of Paul Simons Homeless. Lekman’s vocals looped and delayed, the guitar playing minimal, the effect heartbreaking. There are also two unreleased songs on Kalendervagen 113.D. The first The Rain Has Got To Fall has a superglue chorus, brittle guitar chords and a world weary air. Our Last Swim In The Ocean is a real gem. A glorious spell spun from a golden melody, some smart whistling and a soaring vocal. Kalendervagen 113.D is rounded out by stripped dowm versions of tracks from Kortedala. Friday Night at The Drive In Bingo is frantic, A Postcard to Nina loses a fair deal of its fun laid bare. The songs sound hushed and small compared to the colourful riot of the fleshed out versions. This is an interesting curio for fans like me and well worth seeking out if you are smitten with Jens Lekman but it’s not the perfect introduction for a new comer. Start with Night Falls Over Kortedala and then come here once your enraptured.
