Sounding like the spawn of Jean-Michele Jarre and Nobukazu Takemura, Australia's Jeremy Dower's latest CD is a playful mix of cheap synthesizers and almost video game-like rhythms. A little too playful really. There's something bordering on hackneyed in this collection of instrumentals. Although it could be construed as a loving tribute to the work of electronic pioneers like Eno, Roedilus, and Cluster, it more often than not comes across as kind of a joke. You can almost hear the smirk in the bleating of virtual trumpets and saxophones that tend to take up the melody on the majority of the tracks here. Looking a little too far backward, this release needs to receive the rare request to take itself a little more seriously.
