Robin Guthrie's label Bella Union re-released Kid Loco's follow up to the amazing 'A Grand Love Story,' entitled 'Kill Your Darlings.' Mix master, Kid Loco, sets the mood for sex, drugs and chilling on 'Kill Your Darlings' which comes neatly wrapped in risky packaging with naked women lying about cuddling with teddy bears. What more could we want?
The album begins with a calm acoustic guitar laden track entitled 'Cocaine Diana', in a Love and Rockets fashion. Vocalist Tim Keegan takes the mic in Daniel Ash-esque conviction and on the chorus sings, 'so I'm off to dedicate my life to the death of rock ën roll / no-one gets their money back / and I'll just keep my soul / thank you very much'
'Lucy's Talking' comes rolling in with Loco's creepy and sensual carnal grooves. Featuring the sexy Glaswegian vocalist Louise Quinn on the mic as she talks of kissing the devil and eating chicken, two of my favorite snacks.
'Horsetown In Vain,' 'I Can't Let It Happen to You,' 'Going Round In Circles,' and “Gypsy Good Time,” dream in cadence to chill rhythm styles found on 'A Grand Love Story,' with dark keys swirling about against the hypnotic, intricate percussion and stoned beats garnished with eastern instrumentations.
Would an album be complete with out a little Mary Jane? I suppose not tyleeegan justifies to Jesus about his weed habit being OK, for he's not slamming needles or sniffing the Devil's dust on, 'Three Feet High Reefer.' Followed later on the disc by giddy up, western flavored “Here Come the Munchies,' complete with cheesy lyrics. A track we could have done with out!
The happy piano laden 'A Little Bit of Soul' is Keegan's love song golore, which brings back high school memories of UB40's Red Red WIne, as he exclaims 'Where are you now/I can nearly see your face/That's no good/Now if only I could forget/I know your hips/I know your zips/I kiss your lip/Now everything is great/All I need baby is a little bit of your soul.' The album comes to close with, 'I Want You,' as Keegan laments of lust or love.
The adding of the two vocalists gave 'Kill Your Darlings' a fomulated sound, which distracts from the lush ambient landscapes that have defined Loco's past efforts. Hopefully Loco will return on his forth coming efforts lightening up on the reigns of structure and continue to create music to lose yourself to.
Back to the question of 'What more could we want?' Well, thanks to Belle Union and The Kid for an answer. This release includes a 35 minute ambient chill bonus remix album, of dreamy goodness. So now you have a choice, of reality or to dream, Choose to dream! |
