Will we look back at Sam’s Town in 20 years and hand it some “Best of” award? We all know the band’s front man Brandon Flowers is banking on it. Since I have yet to find a time machine that would let me cruise around and get a perspective of what other albums may be coming our way in the future, let’s just look at The Killers second disc as a normal record made by mere mortals, released in the year 2006 and leave it that.
And, left at that, there are plenty of good things to say. For one, this time around, the guys have a cohesive idea. If you thought they just got lucky with 2004’s “Hot Fuss” then Sam’s Town will probably prove to you that they have the drive and ambition to stay in the game for the long run. Taking a page (or two or three) from Bruce Springsteen, The Killers take the Jersey native’s penchant for drama and cruising down deserted highways at full blast and then up everything a notch. Their songs this time out are centered around the goings on in Sam’s Town one of those depressed dives where nothing ever happens and everyone dreams of getting out.
When the band keeps control of their material, it’s the best kind of rock and roll. “Bling (Confession of a King)” almost soars into the stratosphere and when Flowers wails, “We’re gonna make it out of the fire!” you can easily imagine a stage show full of exploding pyrotechnics. “The River is Wild” is also one of those full-blown anthem songs that drops lyrics like “God speed, you boy”. The playing and singing on this one is frantic, fierce and unforgettable.
Then, there are the times where The Killers try too hard to walk in the working man shoes of The Boss. “Read My Mind” starts with the lyrics “On the corner of main street . . . .” While you can see easily Bruce picking up the local newspaper in his faded jeans, the thought of The Killers walking down the streets of some little town in their designer threads is almost laughable.
