The Kills are a British boy and an American girl. They have a tale of long distance frustration and communiqué. Their passion and torture come through clearly on their latest release No Wow. No Wow is a Big Wow. Although the Kills have been compared to the White Stripes and PJ Harvey I found them to be more like Exene Cervenka and John Doe with driving guitars and curious harmonies. The Kills also reminded me of the Creatures. Siouxsie and Budgie use hard dramatic beats mixed with a passion that the Kills seem to have channeled. The Kills are a duo with names that lead down the art rock path. V.V. and Hotel have created a dynamic duo. They have meshed the sound, passion and personas that equal a success in this arena. “Murdermile” is my favorite track with V.V and Hotel both on vocals. Hotel’s vocals and guitar riffs generate a “train wreck” not only lyrically but also sonically. “Dead Road 7” and “At the Back of the Shell” are reminiscent of the songs by the Creatures and early Siouxsie and the Banshees. “No Wow” and “The Good Ones” intertwine distorted guitars with a Casio sounding drum machine. Unrefined and simplistic, I predict that these will be the radio hits. “I Hate the Way You Love” uses very Devoesque guitar riffs but V.V.’s vocals that add a painfully raw chorus. “Sweet Cloud” and “Rodeo Town” show the strength of V.V.’s narrative writing skills. These songs translate into tales of the old west, guns and loss. “Ticket Man” is another fav. This raw sad song adds a piano to V.V.’s aching moans that truly convey her frustration and pain. This is an edgy, full album from start to finish. V.V. and Hotel are on the right track. I can’t wait to see them live. They have already secured a spot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival which should catapult them into the next big thing. Go buy this CD.
