On their current EP Amoureux Cosmiques (a.k.a. Cosmic Lovers) Kiss Me Deadly, a Montreal based four-piece, seem to have only one thing on their mind - dancing, dancing and then more dancing. Hence tracks titled “Dance 4”, “Dance 1” “Pop” and “Groove”. They really, really want you to tear up the dance floor - that’s the good news. The bad news is that unfortunately, only two of the four tracks incite anything close to club-like bumping and grinding.
“Dance 1” gets it right by managing to be just about everything a mover and shaker on the dance floor could possibly want. There’s the slightly anonymous opening vibe coupled with a pop-heavy middle section. Track also has a killer beat that keeps the energy flowing even if the arrangement does get a little to busy and bogged down by the end. Also keeping the dance vibrations happening is the third track “Pop”. The players truly gel on this track as Adam Moulin’s guitar and Mathieu du Montier’s bass actually blend into something approaching cosmic.
The remaining tracks “Dance 4” and “Groove” take the easy way out by aping every dance track cliché that has ever existed. “Dance 4” relies on processed moaning instead of musical craft. “Groove” starts out well but seems to lose any sense of rhythm half-way through. The steady beat found on some of the other dance cuts seems to have completely disappeared here.
While Kiss Me Deadly might not have hit the right note on every track of Amoureux Cosmiques there’s enough good stuff here to prove that this band intends to stay in the music-making game for the long haul. The only way to go is up and with this EP, they’re already halfway there.
