The U.K.’s latest export, a four piece called the Kooks, are bursting onto the scene with an album that is a bit bloated (the 15 tracks could easily be cut to 10 or 12) but still showcases an incredibly promising group of young rockers. Hot on the heels of the Arctic Monkeys, here’s another group of lads who have a way with a lyric – even better, they understand the oh so necessary function of having a catchy hook. Whether they’re blowing through some of their harder garage rock tunes or playing it nice on ballads, the Kooks are a force to be reckoned with. Surprisingly, they start their album off on a cooing note with “Seaside” a song that has the guys staying just shy of gooey on this song about first love. The sweetness ends quickly though when the power-charged “See the World” takes over. The Kooks are at their best on songs like this when they mix pop hooks with jangly guitars and the lazy drawl of their vocals. “Ooh La” and “Eddie’s Gun” have this combination down perfectly. And, why didn’t this album get a release in the U.S. during the summer? “She Moves in Her Own Way” could have been one of the season’s break-out hits. Where the band does go wrong at times though is in reaching too high too fast. “I Want You” tries to be a U2 arena type song – opening slow and moody and then blowing up into an anthem. But, even Bono and the guys had to grow into “Pride” and The Kooks just haven’t reached that level yet. Give them a couple of years though and they’ll be able to fill those big boy rocker shoes.
