Ever since I started seeing the cover of British singer, Lily Allen's album Alright, Still popping up everywhere, I was hesitant to give it a listen thinking it was going to be just another pop tart singing songs with no message, while dressed in fabulous outfits picked out for her by a stylist. Fortunately, Lily Allen is more, much more.
With a hint of reggae and pinches of jazz and rock, Lily Allen has created an album full of varied songs that, though on the pop side, end up sounding thankfully, both refreshing and inventive. Some of the most invigorating music I’ve heard from a female singer since Kelis, Alright, Still is solid all the way through and filled with enough hooks to hang your coat on so you can dance your ass off.
"Everything's Just Wonderful" is a song that delves into the issue of women needing to be model thin to be happy. The album is filled with songs like this that are true to life with quite a raw perspective, making this a fun listen. While the first half of the album has an early Jamaican music vibe, the second half of the album starting with the song "Littlest Things" goes into a more pop oriented album showing off a rather good band backing her up.
This is a solid pop album that doesn't stick to the rules of having a photoshopped pop princess singing over beats made for her by Timbaland. A great voice combined with addressing actual issues and beats that are retro, while varying from genre to genre, make this a rather fun listen and one worth listening to again. |
