As a music reviewer, it is sometimes impossible to eschew the urge to play the tired old "reminds me of" card. Lines like, "this album reminds me of" and "when I see this, it makes me think about" come so easy, it is a daily challenge to come up with another new and revealing tact in evaluating a release.
It is hard not seeing a sweaty, spaghetti strapped Bono leading a mob of enduring Red Rocks listeners through the apocalyptic chorus of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" when listening to Longwave's album The Strangest Things. This is the captured iconoclast before his Time magazine cover; the cause before the cause celebré. One minute into "Wake Me When Its Over" stirs the shadow land of memory's wrapped up in of one of the great post-punk anthems "I Will Follow." The development of atmosphere, from simple chords to a thunderous sound galloping up on the prairie is rare: the boys in Longwave do it with ease.
Another natural comparison might be the Strokes, but this album is miles more mature than to be deserving of that. There is nothing sophomoric or cheeky about what happens on this record won't soon be obscured. This might bear the onus of being called the second October we come to know as the first of The Strangest Things. While comparisons may be the bane of my craft, it is sometimes the most apt form of praise.
