A dusted off relic recorded sometime in the 60s and discovered by a DJ in the 70s who released the song as a bootleg in the 80s, little else is known about this rare single. The musicians who recorded it and when may forever remain a mystery. The little that is known about Peanut Duck is that it was recorded at Virtue Sound in Philadelphia and that the singer’s name was Marsha Gee. But this singers identity has been disputed as being someone else, maybe a celebrity? Maybe not? Of course, that is unknown too.
What we are left with is a song about some dance called the peanut duck. How you do it, I doubt that even the people who made this record know, but this driving Motown sounding soul song by whoever Marsha Gee is, will get you off your feet and moving. Not the best singer, she often sounds drunk and making the song up as she goes along. For the 60s it sound a bit generic, no different from any other girl group influenced by the Motown sound, but it’s the last minute or so where Marsha Gee begins riffing on the word “Quack” that gives this single the potential of being great. Peanut Duck is fun and sounds like it was recorded at the end of a night of debauchery, making it a rare song worthy of an audiophiles collection or a DJ spin at some 60s night. As an added bonus, on side two is the equally quirky song “Chimpanzee” by Count Yates. An R n’B vocal heavy track accompanied by a 50s rock sound, this track is heavy on the Chimpanzee calls. Truly an odd song, think elements of Screaming Jay Hawkins mixed with the surf style rock of The Ventures. Pretty Awesome and just as rare. |
