Matmos are the electronic duo of Martin C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. They create some very
interesting instrumental music. They mix organic instruments such as bagpipes, whistles, tubas
and celtic drums with heavily processed sounds. The results make them quite an original duo.
No wonder Bjork has used them to program much of her "Vespertine" cd.
"Reconstruction" begins with some martial snare drumming. Then the song veers off into
an almost dub reggae direction. All this ends with some very pretty Appalachian folk music.
Sounds kind of messy-but it works."The Struggle Against Uncertainty Begins" is the most
rock oriented track. It has a big sound and a lot of tension.Very satisfying. My favorite track
was probably "Pelt And Holler".It consists of two parts. The cross rhythms on the song are
just great. The rhythm of walking on gravel added to a nice bass line made this a fun song.
This San Francisco based group might not be for every taste. Some might call it egghead
electronica.I enjoyed "The Civil War" a great deal.If you're looking for an interesting
instrumental experience-Matmos might just hit the spot.
