6 Matt & Kim Matt & Kim iheartcomix records | 2006 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   It’s a scary thing when the White Stripes can already be looked at as the founders of a music movement, but nonetheless, what Jack on guitar and vocals and Meg on drums started, Brooklyn’s Matt & Kim are continuing. This time around the he of the twosome is on keyboards instead of guitars while she is still on drums, but nonetheless, these two have taken the White Stripes’ garage rock and punked it up for their debut self-titled release. Keeping their music simple but propulsive and the right kind of spastic, Matt & Kim have made an album that puts them on the right path for bigger and better things the next time around. Drummer Kim has a rolling beat that she uses to good effect in “Dash After Dash” even if she seems to leave singer Matt flailing to catch up at times. These two are at their best when they match their story-telling pop lyrics with their hyper punk sound. The album’s strongest track “Light Speed” is a prime example. It’s both an ode to and an f-you to the importance placed on summer sports. “5k” also deserves a shout out for mixing in a bit of the Sex Pistols sneer. It adds some much-needed texture to the duo’s own funky punk. Matt & Kim come up short on a few of their songs when they let their formula get completely off track. The instrumental “Grand” sounds like someone ran through an arcade recording the various techno beeps of the machines. It’s interesting for about 30 seconds only. “Yea Yeah” wants to be a sing along but it doesn’t have the right kind of infectious beat to get the party started. While this keyboard/drum-based twosome need some more time to develop their sound, there’s enough here to hope that they will be given the chance to do so.
