I get an image of what had the valley girls bobbing about in mid-eighties’ downtown Hollywood. Toronto’s own vocal chameleon Emily Haines is Metric’s front woman. Her Slick Hip Chic style is crowd friendly and upbeat, which is something critics are agreeing, compliments her well. There is no question of her optimized vocal range. And with her natural sexy physique she applies stylish flare. However the conglomeration itself is disappointing for its lack of substance. With the exception of track number two, “Hustle Rose” which serves as the only ballad for Haines, the album is not much more than an ongoing three chord riff with the occasional electronic switch-up as the outline. I gather that garage bands are putting forth more effort into their music these days. Not quite what one may expect of Broken Social Scene’s multi musical talented James Shaw, Joshua Winstead and Haines.

This fast paced mixture of today’s post punk and early decade computer pop which was once deemed unworthy of credible musical value with lack of definition. However, on the contrary if it weren’t for the computer aged insubordinates of rock and roll, there would be a lack of influences for today’s genre for the cutting edge listener following icons like Radiohead and Blur. And yet I am still convinced that Metric is a mere re-production of what punk female icons from the eighties sang about twenty years ago, and with the same weightless production. I’d like to see the multi-talented group focus on their other works in progress, and admit no long-term commitment to something limited.

In Memory of: And the list shall include former decadent arcade icons, The Go-Go’s, Josie Cotton, and The Buggles ringing repeatedly “Video Killed The Radio Star”. I can more credibly mention Blondie for having Deborah Harry, the pioneer of female power rock.
