For anyone who was a fan of 'The Glow Pt. 2', you are quite aware of what Phil Elvrum is capable of in the recording studio. Yet, I'm also pretty sure you will not be prepared for what is in store for you on their new CD.
Starting off with a 17 minute track that is dominated by tribal percussion, this new work is working on an almost epic-like scale. Each song forms 'Fantasia'-like images of creation and formation in your mind with each little sound adding a crucial piece to this massive edifice that must be seen (or rather, heard) to be believed.
The song titles themselves ('The Sun', 'Universe', and the title track) reveal the massive scale that Mr. Elvrum is working on. Each song seems to both let out a whimper at the size of the natural world and the space beyond as well as a firm cry of 'I am here and I am a part of it all!'.
This may sound like bunch of flowery bullshit to you, but I promise that once you hear the static, buzz, harmonies, and pounding rhythms on this disc, you will be scrabbling for the thesaurus to put into words what this album has done to you. |
