Mirabilis
“Pleiades”
(9 out of 10)
Mirabilis is pure ethereal bliss. It is a complete work of art. This debut from goth/darkwave icons Dru Allen (This Ascension) and Summer Bowman (The Machine in the Garden) touches deep in the soul and holds captive throughout. This is a religious experience that floats through the listener with wraithlike force.
Like a literary masterpiece the intro and epilogue tie the contents together with vocals of laudable proportions. Utilizing their voices as otherworldly instruments with effortlessness. Dru and Summer do miraculous work bringing the writings of Henry Rowe, Hildegard von Bingen and Walter Leslie Wilmshurst to ghostly life as well as creating original songs that paint dreamy pictures to haunt the soul. Soothing the mind and spirit to a safe place floating among the clouds never wanting to sink back to earth. The songs meander through past and present, using exquisite Latin, unearthly English and traditional Spanish. Their version of “Scarborough Fair” creates an entirely new sound that gives the impression the words were solely written for them. It creates a sound reminiscent of Dead Can Dance but somehow fresh and unique.
Released on Middle Pillar Presents the label born in 1998 as a home for dark atmospheric artistic acts such as The Changelings, The Mirror Reveals, Zoar and The Machine in the Garden. This release should do MPP proud, a birth of brilliance. Packed solid with talented cameos that don’t take away but add chapter-by-chapter stitching emotion and feeling together. Regeana Morris (The Changelings) lends her unearthly voice to the track “Ripple” with grace and expertise blending the song into the package. Katy Belle (Matson Belle) sings “Invocation of the Sun” placed neatly as the climax of this masterpiece. Newcomer Rebecca Colleen Miller is a welcomed addition and heading in the right direction refining her talents. Pete Murray vocalist from such nu metal/rock acts as Lo Pro, Ultraspank and Indica tries his hand at programming and engineering on most of the tracks. Murray has made excellent choices and is a credit to this work of art.
The future is bright for Mirabilis. The debut full length is creative, passionate, a classic that has only just begun. I can hear great things coming from this album. I can only hope some music director working on some film somewhere hears this and realizes the full potential.
