My Morning Jacket returned earlier this year with the brilliant ATO/RCA release It Still Moves under much anticipated critical acclaim. With all this pressure, the band delivered its finest moment and spent the year touring, even opening for converted MMJ devotee Dave Grohls’ Foo Fighters on a summer jaunt. This disk is a slow paced, Deep South rock dream. Think of Sigur Ros doing collaboration with the Allmann Brothers. Well, maybe no that striking, but you get the idea. Apparently, singer Jim James records vocals in a grain silo which lends this high, echo pitched vocal, which is somehow quite soothing, like some tea with honey. Flanked by guitars heavy with reverb, some deep bass and some southern drumming you get an oral feast for your ears. Some would say these guys don’t have the star power to make it ‘big’ but if you ask me, the course has already been charted. Standout tracks on this CD are One Big Holiday, Run Thru and Just One Thing. Support the longhaired, birk wearing hippies for the deep south and give this one a chance. |
