Finally someone to make folk music cool for the dressed all-in-black crowd, Nina Natasia is a very talented singer-songwriter based in New York City."Dogs" is a reissue of her first cd-originally released on Socialist Records in 1999,The fifteen tracks are well produced and contain some great arrangements.The use of viola and cello are quite tasty.

The first track "Dear Rose" contains just guitar and vocals.A sparse and melodic
introduction.The following songs begin to add upright bass and drums to the songs.
"A Dog's Life"is a truly memorable song with some fine strings added for spice.
The most rocking song in the bunch is "Nobody Knew Her".The song starts with
voice and guitar.All of a sudden an entire band appears,The sound is that big
roots rock thing-with some fine viola playing added.A real treat! The cd ends with
a pretty acoustic number called "4 years".

"Dogs" is a well produced and diverse modern acoustic cd.A fan of Kristin Hersh
or her former band Throwing Muses would probably enjoy the music of Nina Natasia.The addition of viola and cello adds greatly to the cd.The sympathetic drumming and upright bass are also quite nice."Dogs" is a fine first cd.It makes me want to hear the two newer cds from 2002 and 2003.
