Eclectic guitarist, Omar A. Rodriguez Lopez of the late At The Drive-in, and currently The Mars Volta and Defacto released a soundtrack to a film he is working on, entitled "A Manual Dexterity." This is the first volume of a two part soundtrack.

The fictional film, now nearing completion in Los Angeles, was started during the ending of At The Drive-In. The music is a series of collaborations with some of his more avant-garde musician friends including John Frusciante, members of De Facto and The Mars Volta.

"A Manual Dexterity" begins with "Around Knuckle White Tile," which slowly builds with shaking rattles and reverse guitars snaking their way against the slow building of drums backed with a dissonant bass line.

"Dyna Sark Arches," kicks thing off with its phat latin grooves and guitar shrills. The song reminds me of two parts Tommy Guerrero mixed with one part The Mars Volta and a sprinkle of Defacto. The result is amazing. The recording quality is crystal clear; a refreshing change from the murky tracks on "De-Loused In The Comatorium," and Defacto recordings.

On "Here the Tame Go By," some acoustic guitars play in the far distance, interrupted by a patch chord being plugged in with beautiful feedback by electric guitars.

There is no Greek drama on "Deus Ex Machina," which translates to "God from the machine," a festive Latin flavored track, complete with mariachi guitars and jovial horns.

"Sensory Decay part II," begins with some amazing fuzz keyboards, later joined by a "Radiohead, Kid A-esque" beat, which continue to drone together in a bizarre unison, and never finds its lost predecessor on this volume.

"A Manual Dexterity" closes with "The Palpatations Form a Limit;" the most straightforward track, in an institutional kind of way. The track is filled with some guitar work from Mars or possibly Jupiter. Omar's other half, Cedric (ATDI/Volta), appears; belting out a barrage of twisted complimenting vocals.

Omar is a brilliant artist of our time. I am glad to see he's working on a variety of endeavors and the music to run along with them. "A Manual Dexterity," is a must hear, so get your pocket books out Volta Fans, there's much more than a modicum of pleasures to be had here.
