Dave Navarro has a new band and you would think, since he spends so much time dolling out advice to wannabe big- timers as the host of the CBS reality music show Rock Star, that his own project would be super solid. Well, think again because The Panic Channel sounds like one of the biggest wannabe bands of all time. All of the elements may be in place - Navarro can play a guitar and vocalist Steve Isaacs has some nice front man pipes, but put it all together and you get mush – loud propulsive mush – but still mush.
On their debut album (ONe), the guys stumble right out of the gate with their opening track “Teahouse of the Spirits”. The song is pure schlock rock, but the band was never clued in to that fact and they play and emote with deadly seriousness, trying to lift lyrics like “I am humble / I am calling . . . I can feel you / I can hear you” into high art. I took it seriously the first time around when I heard similar cries in that little rock opera called Tommy.
The band fares slightly better when they take it down a bit. The mid-tempo Latin-tinged “Bloody Mary” waxes poetic about a beautiful street supplier. It could pass for a good urban ballad if they re-titled the song. When I hear “Bloody Mary” all I can think of is telling ghost stories at 4th grade sleepovers. Another song that showcases the guys’ sensitive side, “She Won’t Last” also isn’t half bad.
The rest of the album spends it’s time borrowing heavily from others. Coldplay can be found in the arty snoozer “Outsider”. On “Lie Next to Me”, Isaacs whimpers “When you like next to me / I can’t be Superman / But I’ll do the best I can”. It makes fellow Superman heralders Five For Fighting sound hard core.
By trying too hard to cover all of the modern rock bases, The Panic Channel fails to bring it home.
