Richie Hawtin a.k.a. Plastikman creates perfect music for scary science
fiction films-only without the movie. This is his first cd that employs vocals and
I wish he had left them off the "Closer" cd.The vocals are cold vocoder treated
rants about voices in your head etc......The music is fine without distracting
Darth Vader like voiceovers. The music on "Closer" is inventive minimalist
electronica.
"Ask Yourself" starts the disc with a monologue about hearing those darn
voices in your head. What follows is a fine instrumental with a slightly arabic
feel to it.Then the voice starts to make transmissions about those wacky
voices.A weird start."Disconnect" has a really nice series of notes on delays.
On this song Richie is trying to disconnect his brain.Just mute that vocoder!
The last two tracks "I No" and "I Don't Know" start like an eerie space movie
theme.By the time "I Don't Know" get going the bass drum starts to pound
an almost disco beat.Kind of like dance music on a space station.
"Closer" is an interesting cd.The sounds and production are very good.
Great stereo effects. There aren't any catchy pop tunes on this collection.
If you are a fan of experimental electronic music-"Closer" might be your
ticket.Richie-lose the scary voice-----please!
