Back in the mid-1980s the Pogues proved punk doesn’t belong only to sneering Londoners and seedy New Yorkers. You can be just as dirty and degenerate in Ireland! By mixing the sounds of traditional Irish folk music with the whip lashing pace and debauchery of punk, this six-piece band avoided the sophomore slump with their wickedly solid second album Rum, Sodomy & the Lash. The disc, produced by none other than Elvis Costello, is getting a much-needed reissue along with the bands other works. And now, 21 years down the road from its original 1985 release, RS&tL still plays like a fantastically wild night at an underground Irish pub.
Led by slurring vocalist Shane MacGowan, before he descended into a no man’s land of drug and alcohol addiction, all of the staples of a good punk show and a wild night on the town are on the list just waiting to be checked off. Getting kicked in the balls? Check- it’s mentioned in “The Old Main Drag”. Ghosts rattling at the door? Check – it’s there on the Irish jig on crack song “The Sickbed of Cuchulainn”. And, if that isn’t enough, put on the lusty howling song “Wild Cats of Kilkenny” as you prep for a rave (err . . . evening out). The true punk rock award though goes to the super sped up “Billy Bones” – sing it five times fast and you’ll pass out.
Now, if you still need another reason to run and pick up this reissue, how about this – six bonus tracks! And, even better – they’re not throwaways. All but one (the so-so “London Girl”) could have easily found a place on the album as is.
If you missed the Pogues the first time around, now is the time to play a serious game of catch-up. |
