8 Polyphonic Spree The Beginning Stages Of The Polyphonic Spree Hollywood Records | 2003 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   The Polyphonic Spree must be one of the strangest ensembles around.The group consists of over twenty members dressed in flowing white robes.The instruments range from flute to cello to electric guitar to tuned percussion.The sound is an upbeat symphonic pop that is based around simple-happy themes.The band was founded by Tim DeLaughter,who led Tripping Daisy until 1999."The Beginning Stages..." is a fine opening effort from this concept group. "Section 1 (Have A Day/Celebratory)" opens the cd like a symphonic overture.The various instruments come in and build until Tim DeLaughters simple yet catchy lyrics stick in your mind.My favorite track was "Section 8 (Soldier Girl)".It opens with a flute-followed by bass/synth/guitar/cello. The lyric is the same line repeated over and over-like a mantra.A great pop/rock song. My only trouble with the cd was the last song."Section 10 (A Long Day)" was almost thirty-seven minutes of a sonic experiment gone totally wrong.It's some kind of tape delay that goes nowhere for over half the length of this cd.What's up with the hissing radiator sound? The first nine cuts of "The Beginning Stages...Of The Polyphonic Spree" are some the best cuts I've heard in a long time.The last cut should have been a b-side.
