5 Radiohead Harry Patch (In Memory Of) Self Released | 2009 | Single Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Even with my Radiohead mindset in place, it’s hard to find a place for this in the Radiohead mythos other than for what it is, a one-off track that would’ve otherwise been a B-side if they were releasing store-bought singles off of their most recent album to date, In Rainbows. And so since it is a one-off, it is to be mentioned that it wasn’t of a random design. This composition was written as tribute to the last British veteran of World War I, Harry Patch, who passed away recently. Thom uses quotes from the man in the song, but Radiohead’s motivation to make note of this man’s passing is beyond me. Perhaps there’s some research to be done for the overtly curious. As for the track’s merits, perhaps rabid fans of the band will be more forgiving than passive ones, because it’s roughly five and a half minutes of Thom Yorke singing his high notes through a prominent string section with no resonating impression left tattooed on the mind, even after multiple listens. In other words, a song you’d probably hit skip on, or let play out while you left the room to perform some quick household chore for it not being one of their stronger recent selections. Don’t get me wrong. “Harry Patch” is to be by no means kept from your collection, but maybe don’t go out of your way to obtain this paper airplane that wafts aimlessly from the window of the band’s studio.
