Before their break-up in 2000, Rage Against The Machine seemed poised to become one of the greatest rock bands ever. Spittin’ lyrics of fire over a production unparalleled in rock, the group was at the top of the game, and considered by many, including Rolling Stone magazine to be the best band in the world at the time. Although it upset the fans, after 4 incredible albums, the group called it quits. Now, loyal people to the group only have these albums to reminisce on, as well as videos of concert performances that show how amazing this group was live. Now, four years after the break-up, a final performance at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA is released on CD for fans to look back on such an incredible group once again.
As always, Zack De La Rocha shows the intensity that a lead vocalist should have with his lyrics driven as hard as the instruments being hammered on by the band members. The adlibbing on different songs by both De La Rocha, and guitarist Tom Morrello show the performing genius this group possessed in knowing just how to get the crowd energized, and participating with them. As they drive through each song, you can feel how intense the atmosphere must have been, and almost get chills picturing yourself in the situation of the audience.
The only drawback to this disc is the lack of certain songs like “Wake Up” from their self-titled debut album, and “Year of the Boomerang” from the Evil Empire album. However this just attests to the fact that they have so many great songs, they couldn’t make everyone happy with their selection of material played. It might have been better to replace one of the two cover songs they chose to perform with one more of their original songs. In any case, this album is an awesome collection for any Rage fan, and a chance to relive such a great performance.
