Crossing dance drenched electronic blips and bleeps with live instruments is nothing new, and with that you may not be impressed with what Ratatat has to offer. But by keeping the party going strong throughout the whole album, they have created something that gets better and better with each listen, and that is impressive.
Made up of Brooklyn based duo multi-instrumentalist/programmer Evan Mast and guitarist Mike Stroud, this is their second album, but you may have known them as Cherry before changing their name to Ratatat. While you might think, “great, another electro-band out of Brooklyn,” there’s something about Classics that is both fun and chill about their sophomore effort that works well.
With riffs you can both dance to and rock in the background of a little get together, Classics plays more like a score than an album you might try to find a single off of. While the song “Wildcat,” a standout track simply because of the tiger roars in the background, borders on the cheesy side, this instrumental album is full of riffs and sounds worth hearing on repeat, though you may have a problem trying to figure out where Classics begins and ends due to the similarity between songs. But that is not a bad thing here.
