Thanksgiving day is long gone, but that is no reason to shun Ray Davies’ latest EP as mere leftovers. As a teaser for the just released greatest hits album, the five track EP has just enough meat to keep you at the dinner table.
At times, the Kinks former front man is saucy in his delivery and even brings a little blues into the equation. Other moments find him reserved and casual. Both incarnations are successful in their authenticity.
Above all else, Davies is likable and relatable. There is a life experience that translates in his music. It is something that is lacking in the younger singer-songwriters crowding the radio. And while after forty odd years with a guitar in hand, such is to be expected, nonetheless, it is still welcomed.
The highlight track is “Yours Truly Confused,” which in title alone sounds promising. The twang and hum of the song is evocative of a great movie soundtrack, and would likely be even better performed live. From there, the songs move along steadily, all worthy of a listen. Davies cleverly weaves lyrics and hooks from song to song to create a more cohesive whole. At times though, the effect is redundant, especially considering all but the title track are previously released songs that have been reworked or re-released.
The interesting transitions from the opening track “Thanksgiving Day” to the concluding track of “London Song” are good enough to balance the repetitiveness. Consequently, the lasting impression is a one that eagerly awaits more from this accomplished artist. |
