Rilo Kiley is an indie folk/pop rock band from CA that infuses the political and the personal with a refreshing sense of playfulness. They are not afraid to break out the glockenspiel or shoo bop doo wops as they do on their third album “More Adventurous”. There are a slew of politically minded bands, but while others veer into propaganda land, Rilo Kiley‚s songs are cynical lyrical exposes of the hypocrisy oozing out of our rotten apple pie culture. It does not hurt that lead singer Jenny Lewis has an amazing crystalline voice.

The hit song is ironically titled “It’s a hit”. It skewers a variety of very familiar types. There is the president, “a smoking gun holding ape”, men with trophy wives „no one wants to pay to see her day to day”, celebrities who whine about their jobs „it‚s a sin when success complains”; supporters of the death penalty “it’s only a switch or syringe”, and the falsely pious „the pardons never come from upstairs”. The chorus is ridiculously catchy: “it’s a hit/ and if it’s not/ it’s a holiday for a hanging”. Rilo Kiley rocks out right in the face of all the bad news.
