Maybe…my friend (me) is getting old -- i.e., am no longer a teenager, much less a ‘tweener – but…my friend (I) just can’t jump on a tired trend like…my friend (I) used to. See…my friend (I) thought that whole electro clash thing, and anything resembling that whole electro clash thing was kind of over. But She Wants Revenge proved…my friend (me) wrong. Their four song EP, “These Things” somehow manages to be so totally 80’s, and yet…so Williamsburg 2002-2004.
She Wants Revenge has been compared by many people to Interpol. They do possess three common interests: A chilly emotional emptiness, posturing, and shared custody of a singing voice. Interpol has it every other weekend. Surprisingly, Interpol is the fun parent. They usually take the singing voice to a movie matinee or the Bronx Zoo. While She Wants Revenge is much more serious in wanting to expose the singing voice to the arts -- usually taking it to museums and such.
She Wants Revenge is more of a straight up throwback than a “nu-“anything. And therefore have…slightly…more in common with your Depeche Modes and your Bauhaus than your Bravery’s and your Killers. But you can’t ignore the fact that it’s 2006 and this band has been heavily inspired by music and an aesthetic from twenty years ago. And are therefore by definition unoriginal. Not bad, just unoriginal.
On the other one-gloved hand, what’s not to like about a living breathing I Heart The 80’s band? Black leggings, a banana clip in your hair and a little Wham! in your step never hurt anyone. |
