Their third album „Who‚s Got Trouble?‰ is cowboy cabaret with extra helpings of black romance and old Hollywood. The album title and lead track are inspired by Casablanca but they also possess a striking strangeness that evokes David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino (Shivaree‚s song „Good Night Moon‰ was featured in Kill Bill Volume 2) There have been comparisons to Tom Waits (keyboardist Duke McVinnie toured with him) and Nick Cave (one of the producers), but there has never been another band quite like Shivaree in these parts. The orchestration is both talented and twisted. The horns and strings in particular create the twilit feel of the album. The lead singer is the tastily named Ambrosia Parsley. The lady is a vamp. Her vocals sarsaparilla and spook. She sings Norah Jones under the table. Parsley woos you, blues you into the darkest corner of her dream bar with dark little numbers like surf ballad „I Close My Eyes‰, anti-lullaby „Baby Girls‰ and the secret agent-y „Little Black Mess‰. She even does a sultry cover of Brian Eno‚s 1970 „the Fat Lady of Limbourg.‰ Parsley slow dances with you, mic in one hand, cocktail in the other. When she is done, she blows the smoke from her snakey hot mic into your eyes, then saunters out onto the haunted highway and vanishes.
