Shooting At Unarmed Men formed when bassist John Chapple left the band Mclusky. He then picked up an electric guitar and formed this trio. I have never heard his former band – but Mr. Chapple seems to have swallowed a bunch of late seventies punk records and spit them out for us to hear. The sound is reminiscent of the second tier punk bands that followed the Sex Pistols. Think 999, Tenpole Tudor or a bunch of other bands half remembered these days The sound is your basic three piece thrashing about until they keep repeating some phrases that sounds like a chorus.

The first song "Taking Care Of Business" shows the bands approach. Nice guitar riff/a punky vocal/some nice dynamics until we get to the repeated phrases "they're not as clever as we think they are" and "fire doesn't discriminate". I'm not sure what it all means-but it's a pretty good punk song. "The Long And The Short Of It" is notable for the lyric "I love beer". The song "There's A Reason Why It's Called The Easy Way Out" starts with guitar harmonics and builds more slowly than some of the other songs. The singing is intentionally (?) off key which adds to that
punk flava.

The production on "Soon They Will Be Shooting At Unarmed Men" is very bare bones. It sounds like a well recorded rehearsal. There don't seem to be any overdubs or anything like that. Bassist Simon Alexander and drummer Steve Morgan provide excellent backup to John Chapple. If you missed those second tier punk bands the first time around – "Shooting At Unarmed Men" might be your cup of tea. At least their British accents are real!
