Sometimes good things happen to those who wait. After nearly two years (since its initial debut), North Americans will finally get their opportunity to buy Sia’s COLOUR THE SMALL ONE domestically, where it has been released on Astralwerks due in no small part to the huge popularity of Breathe Me, featured prominently in HBO’S Six Feet Under.
Sia (nee Sia Kate Isobelle Furler) may still be most familiar here for her contributions to Zero 7’s downtempo lovefests both live and in studio, but that may finally change with the non-import price and availability of COLOUR.
Though musically more subdued, and therefore closer in spirit to Zero 7, than her first full-length HEALING IS DIFFICULT, it is lyrically more hopeful and reassuring, particularily on tracks like Sunday and Where We Belong. The song that won’t leave the cd player for me is The Church of What’s Happening Now, a mission statement of rebirth for anyone who’s had their best plan fail or been heartbroken with the results of an election “Throw away yesterday. Today is a brand new day”.
COLOUR THE SMALL ONE is a chillout collection of stories sung by an old soul, one transformed by experience and slightly beaten but stronger for it.
And in case you missed the point, the album ends an uncharacteristically funky and a slightly militaristic remix of Breathe Me by Four Tet and Ulrich Schnauss, respectively. |
