The Sleepy Jackson is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Luke Steele.Along with his supporting cast,-he has made a fine melodic debut. There are many influences on "Lovers"'but Lukes personality seems to make every track shine. The most obvious influence seems to be George Harrison.Maybe it's the guitar playing or the psychedelic touches-but the ghost of George comes through. An enjoyable and diverse cd.
"Good Dancers" opens the cd with a very George song."Vampire Racehorse" heads down a Velvet Underground road a-la "Waiting For The Man".Then the song veers down some country roads.
Very nice."Tell The Girls I'm Not Hanging Out" was my favorite track. This one has an electronic backing that is quite fun."Come To This" sounds like a single to me.Kind of aTom Petty thing about that one.The cd ends with the jaunty folk pop of "Mourning Rain".
"Lovers" seems to sound like a bit of a mish-mash from all the influences-but Luke has created a tuneful and enjoyable debut. The playing is tasteful. The background vocals seem to keep every track consistent. The Sleepy Jackson should make their home of Perth Australia very proud.
