I just discovered Snow Patrol from listening to their
third release Final Straw. From first listen you know
you've heard something like it before; maybe in the
reincarnation of some washed out band from the late
90's. But what allows Final Straw to hold it's own is
the beautiful almost ethereal lyrics of lead singer
Lightbody who oozes a tranquil desperation that
candidly documents his grievances and lost loves as
his listeners voyeur into his inner psyche. But an
album can't hold it's own simply on the clutch of
lyrics.
The music itself is awkward which is
unfortunate since there are twinges of musical talent;
albeit you have to really look for it. During their
attempt at fast songs it felt like a combination of
boredom and confusion through constricted guitar riffs
and programmed drums. Each song sounded almost too
perfectly placed as if hours were spend contending to
every chord, which loses Lightbody's personal message
that is essentially the foundation of this album.
