So, Basic Instinct 2 is premiering soon. I find this interesting. Hasn't enough time past for this to be a remake, essentially? If anything, just model a movie after Basic Instinct and run with the nudity clause: a movie with a beautiful woman with a promiscuous title will draw people in. How do you think Basic Instinct did so well?
Not enough time has passed since Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary, yet Sunset Rubdown, the glorified solo work of WP lead singer Spencer Krug has two releases in the past year. This seems like overkill to me—a Decembrists sized mistake. However, Mr. Krug has found a way to soothe these fears with lovable songs. Only unfortunate repetition stops them from transcending the trendy and (full disclosure: I absolutely love Wolf Parade) near-immaculate Apologies. Ranging from Glifted-like arrangements to later era Sub Pop influences, this EP (coupled with the former Sunset Rubdown release Snake's Got a Leg) shows the lo-fi ideal that fuels Wolf Parade's ire.
What makes Krug's ideas more than mere rehashed Wolf Parade? The structural qualities are basically similar, his voice is unmistakable, and the overall feeling is the same. In effect, the songs stand out due to the bare bones approach and ethic. Like the Lou Barlow albums during Sebadoh and Folk Implosion's heydays, Sunset Rubdown is the exploratory disclosure of the next generational songwriter. Hell, if doesn't sell, maybe he can pose nude for the next one. He's already got the promiscuous title ready to go. |
