They hit the right spot for the right person. Fans of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits or Lee Hazlewood might be perfect to send in the Tindersticks direction. It's a sort of dark late sixties/early seventies pop sound that the band creates since their early nineties beginnings. Singer Stuart Staples has a deep brooding voice. The band backs him with a crisp mellow sound. The sound is barely rock—but definitely alternative. "Nine Films" consists of nine promotional videos made by Martin Wallace for the band between 1993 and 2003. The first film is the video for "City Sickness." It is co-directed by Jarvis Cocker – singer for the band "Pulp." The video follows Stuart Staples and his baby carriage around London during one day. It consists of people enjoying a summer day. Not very MTV and thus very refreshing, "Bathtime" is a great stripped down performance video. Nice black and white photography. "Rented Rooms" switches from black and white to color once it gets jazzy and the showgirls strut their stuff. "Sometimes It Hurts" follows a couple who live near an amusement park. The final film is an instrumental called "The Art Of Making Love." A camera is trained on a bed while a man and woman take turns getting into sexual positions. Not erotic but interesting in an artsy way. "Nine Films By Martin Wallace" is a series of well made non-MTV style videos. It also is very English. You get to see the band—but also some normal folks living their lives. As with most video compilations "Nine Films" is meant for the diehard Tindersticks fans.
