After a night out where the concert was too loud, the karaoke at the bar was even worse than normal, or the party was a bit over crowded you just want to go home and relax with some relative peace and quiet. When looking for a CD to help you mellow out, try “A Colores” by Tristeza. The new album by this San Diego quintet is a good collection of calm instrumental tacks of techno-type beats, harmonized guitars and keyboards.
The music itself is almost unclassifiable. At times as it is reminiscent of some of Radiohead’s most ambitious music post- Kid A but is never as depressing. The guitar sounds clean with the only distortion coming from the keyboards. Collectively, the album has a hypnotic sound to it that never gets too aggressive or too mellow.
On one of the more interesting songs, “Wand,” the mixing was interesting on how the lead guitar was layered over by both the rhythm guitar and the keyboard. The following song, “Aereosviones”* has an other-worldly feel to it but it could just be that the keyboard opening sounds very much like the theme song to the “X-Files.”
Although the music is very good and the songs were produced well, the drawback to “A Colores” is that it gets repetitive after a while. By the end of the album one can get bored with it and either pass out (if you follow my suggestion from above) or turn it off. The music is good all the way through and to insure that the entire album is listened to, eventually, the best way to listen would be to play the songs randomly. There would be nothing lost by doing so as the songs are all similar enough, it could be hard to ever get into the listening pattern.
