Issac Brock of Modest Mouse has teamed up with Red Red Meat's Brian Deck, Califone's Tim Rutili, Pall Jenkins of Black Heart Procession, and others at his Portland home studio, Glacial Pace to complete his new side project Ugly Casanova.
The debut album entitled "Sharpen Your Teeth," is filled with thirteen tracks of various flavors. The opening track 'Barnacles' is very at home with a Modest Mouse feel as Brock calmly sings "I don't know me you don't know me & you don't know you, so we fit so good together cuz I new you like I knew myself. We clung on like Barnacles on a boat." The track 'Spilled Milk Factory' could have easily slip onto Tom Waits new album with its southern jangled rhythm and percussion by Brian Deck. Tim Rutti & Brock duet with screams and holler's ending with Brock's harmonica. Other tracks like 'Parasites', and 'Cat Faces' are very Modest Mouse friendly, while the track 'Hotcha Girls' breaks new ground with dreamy lullaby vocals, accompanied by a violin.
This this beautifully packaged album is must have for any MM fan, complete with a lyric booklet to sing a long to. "Sharpen Your Teeth," is anything but ugly. |
