9 Various Artists Compounds + Elements All Saints Records | 2006 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   COMPOUNDS + ELEMENTS is an overview of music from the catalogue of All Saints Music, eighteen tracks from various artists stretching back to the late 1980's, in a slick well-designed digipak with foldout poster. The anchor of the cast is Brian Eno, the Carl Sagan of ambient music, and overseer of the All Saints label since it's creation (by him) in 1991. Half the selections are either by him or Harold Budd, with the rest ranging from established practicioners like Roger Eno and Jon Hassell to newer artists to the scene and the label like Marconi Union and Vacabou. Though the compilation is a consistent listen, it's not because every track is interchangable. Some cuts, like Djivan Gasparyan's 7 DECEMBER 1988 or Jon Hassell's OUT OF ADEDARA lean much more towards world music. Others, like Roger Eno's WINTER MUSIC or Harold Budd's MARION BROWN or CERAMIC AVENUE, resemble filmscore or modern light classical. What can be said, however, is that most of the tracks do seem to exist to be soaked up in one way or another, to float rather than to wander. With few exceptions, this CD is meant to be chilled to-even the Sigur Ros-like SLEEPLESS, from Marconi Union, achieves it's power from the slow build, rather than a hook or melody. By the end of the first third, Budd's WINDOWS CHARM and Eno's NEROLI will have you thoroughly convinced of where you stand with this type of music, if any doubts exist in the first place. The one track that does stand apart stylistically (and perhaps that's why it is sequenced second to last) is John Cale's interpretation of Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," using a children's choir and large orchestra in addition to Cale himself. It is lovely, grandiose and passionate, a strange and intriguing addition to the rest. The question with much 'ambient' music is whether it is meant to be listened to, or rather to be allowed to become part of the environment? COMPUNDS + ELEMENTS won't provide the answer, but in this case it really doesn't matter because you can pick this sucker up NEW for three dollars, making it pretty much worth the sticker price whatever your tastes happen to be. For both newcomers and those familiar with the work of Eno and friends, COMPOUNDS + ELEMENTS is a solid and classy introduction to the All Saints catalogue.
