8 Various Artists Dark Was The Night: A Red Hot Compilation 4AD | 2009 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   Dark Was The Night is a compilation produced by Red Hot Organization in order to raise funds for AIDS prevention, education, and relief. Since 1989, the group has put together a compilation nearly every year, each with a different theme: Bossa, alternative rock, country, afrobeat, etc. Dark Was The Night features a collection of the most acclaimed indie rock groups out there as well as some up-and-comers definitely worth listening to. Each one of the 31 songs was written specifically for this project, and there isn’t a bad one in the mix. For the most part the album is dominated by down-tempo acoustic compositions. Andrew Bird, Kevin Drew, Iron & Wine, and the duo of Antony and Bryce Dessner provide soulful and lonely numbers that make you want to sink back into your couch and stare at the ceiling in a beautiful depression. The sedate and spine-chilling harmonies of Bon Iver’s “Brackett, WI” make for yet another hypnotic highlight, and a new mix of Grizzly Bear’s “Deep Blue Sea” colors Daniel Rossen’s quiet acoustic guitar with tasteful and ethereal splashes of reverb-y sounds. There are a couple of rockers amongst the coffeehouse numbers. My Brightest Diamond’s “Feeling Good” builds from a slow burning blues groove to a raucous stomp of brass topped with an explosive trumpet solo. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings channel Motown funk-soul, and Arcade Fire offer a piano-pounding Bowie-like anthem. My Morning Jacket bring back the sounds of their earlier work (minus the reverb) with the head-swaying alt-country/quasi-mariachi composition “El Caporal.” Sufjan Stevens’ sprawling 10-minute “You Are The Blood” mixes swirling electronics, low brass, and a classical piano cadenza in what’s arguably his darkest and heaviest-hitting composition to date . . . one that’s practically worth the price of the CD just by itself. And then there are the collaborations. The Dirty Projectors and David Byrne’s “Knotty Pine” is an energetic and suitably quirky kickoff to the compilation (though surprisingly straightforward given their individual boundary-pushing work). Grizzly Bear’s haunted vocals complement Feist’s perfectly in the ghostly waltz “Service Bell.” Blonde Redhead’s collaboration with Devastations is another winner, with Kazu Makino’s tortured vocals floating over reversed suitcase piano and slow handclaps that melt away until her voice is left suspended in faint clouds of delay. While Dark Was The Night certainly isn’t essential listening, it’s a great reminder of how many good indie artists are out there, both established and up-and-coming. The fact that most of the songs stay in the realm of down-tempo acoustic guitar musings can make for an exhausting listen if taken in all once, but for a mellow late-night/early morning listening session, it’s hard to beat this compilation. And really, when you’re supporting a great cause with new material from so many mellow heavy-hitters, how can you complain?
