7 Various Artists The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou Hollywood Records | 2004 | Sountrack Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   What could possibly be better than a soundtrack of classic David Bowie songs in addition to Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Devo and The Zombies? Well, what if one of the film’s cast members, Seu Jorge, performed not one, not two, but five classic David Bowie tracks? And if what if they were performed on a lonely nylon string acoustic guitar and sung in Portuguese? Now were talking! This is something only found on a Wes Anderson soundtrack. Anderson released the soundtrack to his film “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” with a star-studded cast and music line-up. The disc includes Bowie’s gritty “Queen Bitch” and his heartfelt “Life On Mars?” Brazilian pop singer and actor, Seu Jorge, performs five classic Bowie covers in an off-the-cuff, recorded-on-the-set sound. Jorge plays Pelé dos Santos in the film but most will remember him as Knockout Ned from 2002’s amazing film “City of God.” Jorge's beautiful Portuguese covers of the David Bowie classics brought the film and soundtrack to life. The songs translate well in Portuguese and sound as foreign and odd as any of Wes Andersons’ movies, but at the same time are desperately familiar. “Rebel, Rebel," “Rock N' Roll Suicide” and the sloppily strummed "Starman" are the most recognizable gems, but the more obscure “Life On Mars?” and “Five Years” deliver the chills even in their alien renditions. I can’t be certain if one could fully appreciate these romantic Bowie recreations without having seen the film. Seu Jorge and the entire crew of the Belefonte are each costumed in powdered blue outfits and each don stoplight red beanies on their heads. In addition to the eighties’ “Gut Feeling” by Devo, the band’s lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh scores the film with his own quirky tunes. The whacky “Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op” is my favorite among his five disturbingly great submissions. Also included is the seventies’ Joan Baez and Ennio Morricone collaboration "Here's To You,” ambient scored tracks by Sven Libaek, Iggy Pop and the Stooges “Search and Destroy,” Scott Walker’s “30 Century Man,” and the obscure "The Way I Feel Inside” by The Zombies. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou soundtrack isn’t a complete play-by-play of the movie, as it's missing the film’s climatic ending track "Staralfur" by Sigur Rós, and should have included far more of Seu Jorge’s tasty Bowie covers, but for a film that I couldn’t just see once and one that delivered an urge to purchase its soundtrack I’d say it’s a multi-faceted and overwhelmingly great voyage.
