To be honest, before I saw the movie Juno, I had only heard of Kimya Dawson and her band, the Moldy Peaches, through friends. But after seeing the movie and hearing their songs, it was one of those instances that made me realize how completely amazing they are as songwriters. Completely complementing a movie that is sweet, awkward, and funny, the songs for the movie were perfectly picked out. Blending some classic rock artists with more recent artists, the Juno soundtrack works both despite this and because of this. Kimya Dawson and Adam Green croon to each other on the soundtrack’s key track, “Anyone Else But You,” while the Velvet Underground, Belle & Sebastian, Cat Power, Mott the Hoople, and even Buddy Holly perform some of their rarer cuts that help make the album and the movie. A beautiful thing about this album, too, is that it plays more like a mix tape than a soundtrack, a collection of carefully chosen songs from a good friend in a certain mood or someone who wants you to take a listen to some of their favorite songs. Working well with the movie, if you have or haven’t heard songs by The Moldy Peaches or Kimya Dawson, picking up this album is a great introduction to their kooky and beautiful world.
