While Oslo, Norway is by no means the first place you might think of when it comes to soul, it surprisingly had it’s heyday of great soul music. Here, the NRK Sessions represents a compilation of soul, afro-jazz, and Latin influenced music from this Nordic country. The NRK, derived from the Norwegian National Broadcasting Bureau, played a key role for the music coming out of Oslo in the 60s and 70s trading studio time for hits to play on the radio. With many of the artists on this compilation connected to Oslo’s Club 7, which existed from 1963-1985, it helped musicians and bands refine and churn out everything from jazz to psychedelica. The bands on this NRK Sessions compilation all played and recorded at Club 7 and the songs here represent many of the Norwegian artists that developed their style during the 60s through early 80s. Some went on to better things, some didn’t, but the music that came out of this place during this time period will change your mind about what Europe has to offer in terms of soul, because they’ve got it and it’s on this disc as proof. Starting off this dance party is The Band No Name with a version of Led Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta Love." A funky goodtime with horns and conga’s, they turn this guitar heavy blues song into a jazzy funkathon with some Latin soul that makes for a fun listen. Other standout tracks include The Band No Name’s versions of Buddy Miles’ "Them Changes" and James Brown’s "Hot Pants." While it’s no secret that most of this album is filled with cover versions of soul and funk heavy hits of the 60s and 70s including The Band No Name with Magni Wentzel’s version of "Love the One Your With," by Stephen Stills, it’s a fun listen coming from a place you wouldn’t expect. Check out Geir Wentzels Orkester with Magni Wentzel covering Ashford and Simpson’s "California Soul," and feel the ice melt from your perception of what this nordic country has to offer in terms of music. |
