6 Various Artists War Child Presents: Heroes Astralwerks | 2009 | Album Biography Comments (0) Read Full Page Digg Review Add del.icio.us   On paper, perhaps, it sounds like a recipe for lackluster results when a group of mostly famous musicians are called together to contribute cover versions of their favorite tunes, but thankfully on this album that is not the case. From the get-go Beck delivers a strong beginning on this disc with his cover of Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.” It sets the tone for the better portion of the disc where the listener doesn’t necessarily have to be aware of the original in order to have fun with the cover version they’re about to discover. Nice surprises are also found in selections like Hot Chip’s pleasurable take on Joy Division’s “Transmission,” with the brand of danceable electronic rock they’ve been putting out in recent years. However, the idea that many so-called ideal cover situations that you’d think would be good but aren’t is embodied in the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s lame-hopping-angst as they rip through the Ramones staple “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.” Then there are covers that just befuddle you when looking at the track listing and then repel you when you hear them. Peaches provides one of the few stinkers on this collection with “Search and Destroy” by Iggy & the Stooges. It just makes that finger go to your head and scratch it, but maybe less than Lily Allen’s loathsome rendering of “Straight to Hell” by the Clash, with Mick Jones himself on it as well. Probably the least-known act on “Heroes,” Elbow provide some left-field grace covering a U2 fan favorite, “Running To Stand Still.” While keeping the integrity of the original intact, they take it to another close-by sanctuary of melancholy to lament. The real gem in this collection with no reoccuring theme to the charity it contributes to is the closer and title track cover by TV On The Radio. They take David Bowie’s “Heroes” and run with it like I’ve never heard most bands do with such excellence. Many bands, for varying reasons, miscalculate their presence in what is taking place when covers are performed, but TV On The Radio does all this with flying colors and with a reimagined version of an incredibly famous song by an icon of the rock 'n' roll art form. All in all, the experience of listening to this album leaves you in a favorable state of mind, and the purchase of this CD contributes to sending relief to children who are affected by war-torn surroundings.
