Venus Hum is a dream pop/electronic group from Nashville. The trio makes
a middle of the road kind of electronic music. The vocals by Annette Strean
are exquisite, but have that Star Search/American Idol showiness in many of
the songs. The background music by Kip Kubin and Tony Miracle provides an
excellent setting for the songs. The sounds are quirky enough to keep you
guessing. 'Big Beautiful Sky' is a promising debut.
'Hummingbirds' is one those songs that gets stuck in your head. The chorus
and melody stick with you long after the song leaves the cd player. 'Bells'
is a lush tune that recalls the dreaminess of Kate Bush. My favorite song
is 'Sonic Boom'. This is nice slice of electro/funk.Annette has to spit out the
rapid-fire lyrics-not leaving time for vocal gymnastics. The processed vocals
at the end are very nice.
'Big Beautiful Sky' is a promising debut. I hate to rank on someone for
singing too well. Maybe part of the problem is that it's just her voice and the
music. Maybe more background vocals? If you are a fan of lush melodic
electro/pop-Venus Hum is for you.
