In order to be fair let me begin with my first introduction with Venus Hum's EP. On a long drive up the California Coast Venus Hum went into the disc changer with a few of my favorite albums ranging from Radiohead, Kid Loco, and Greyboy. Venus Hum stood out as eclectically different, but if I were have chosen Hooverphonic, Bjork and Poe I may not have even noticed that the EP existed in the rotation. They are trip hop personified with the title track Hummingbirds. Anette Streans vocals are highly melodic and the rythm is standard trip hop reminding me a lot of Hooverphonic's second album Blue...Power...Milk. Tracks 2 & 3 didn't do too much for me, there's a lot of Byork lurking around in track 3, so if your a fan you may like it. Track 4 I feel gives Venus Hum real personality. The song sounds much more refined and original than the previous 3 tracks. The song utilizes Enyaesque layering which provides a perfect backdrop for the melodic voice of Anette to excel. Overall the EP indicates the album should be pretty solid with a few 'gems' that would warrant play in your regular MP3 mix.
