Singer/songwriter Vinicius Cantuaria has released a super-smooth bossa nova styled album with an unabashedly contemporary sound. Aknowledging his roots with a cover of Tom Jobim’s "A Felicidade", Cantuaria’s true abilities shine through on his original compositions. Alternating his vocals between Portuguese and English (occasionally in mid song), the hugely popular Brazilian performer also incorporates strings and even electric samples as delicate embellishments to his mellow grooves.
The melodic opening track "A Dor" sets the lush tone for the rest of the album with violins, a viola and cello accompaniment. "Saudadas de Voce" and "Paraguay" are peppered with Michael Leonhart’s well-played trumpet harmonies. In addition to the obvious sensitivity of the music, the fine people at Hannibal
Records have thoughtfully included English translations of the lyrics for those of us who cannot understand the sensually delivered Portuguese tongue, but are moved by the sheer poetry of the words.
Although this album will never get you hyped-up along with your morning cup of Colombian Supremo, it is perfect for relaxing during an intimate dinner (after you’ve played through your customary crooners) and need something from way south of the border to get your date in the mood for desert.
