Infinite Jest, the debut EP from the Ohio based quintet, We Are The Fury, sounds like just about every other dance-punk album…but who said that’s a problem? The EP is undoubtedly catchy and fun to listen to. 2006 should prove to be a big year for the band as the dance-punk fad seems to just be getting into full swing.
We Are The Fury, instead of taking a cue from bands like Fall Out Boy, infuses elements from 1970-80’s glam rock. The opening song on the EP, “Better Off This Way” is crazy and upbeat but has undeniable roots to bands like Hot Hot Heat. The song is extremely energetic, so much so that I can’t imagine someone not enjoying listening to it. The overdrive present on the instruments throughout the album combined with some powerful beats produces an almost dirty or trashy sound. The vocals have a manic and hyper quality to them, reminiscent of My Chemical Romance and, at times, The Killers. The EP gets more unique with each track as songs like “Anesthetic Parade” and “Parody at the Masquerade” get consistently more melodic though never dropping the percussion that makes you tap your feet or the trashy raunchy sound.
The closing song, “Soap Opera”, ends the album with an admirable close. The song picks up the pace after the slower speed of a couple songs before it. We Are The Fury are clearly skilled at their instruments and show promise in their ability to infuse creativity within their songs that often sound like they could be from another band. Infinite Jest throws together rock, punk, and some pounding dance music well enough that they should be the next big thing, even if they’re not spectacular or incredibly original. |
